Message from our President

Hello to all!

There is so much going on with us here at Walk AS One! As many of you are aware the board had an excellent meeting/retreat in Maine at my parents home on the island of Vinalhaven. Being face to face and setting aside a couple of days of meetings was so fantastic for us and an opportunity to really strategize and plan out this very important next year. We wish Cookie Hopper, Carrie Kellenberger, and Adam Wolfe had been able to join us – we missed them – but hopefully next time!

You may have noticed our increased presence on social media recently. Each board member has an assigned day of the week that we now post and we’ve brought in Christina Lowe, co-captain of my WYASO team The Blue Apples, as additional volunteer social media help. She is a superstar at it and we are thrilled to add her to our core volunteers. Please make sure you are following us on our Walk AS One and Walk Your AS Off Facebook pages, Twitter account, and Instagram to find out the latest about us and happenings worldwide about Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Karen Fitch

Karen Fitch has also stepped up yet again to help us and is working with Heather Stewart on a calendar we are working to have ready for Christmas that will be filled with artwork from the community! Thank you so much Karen for all that you do for Walk AS One, we all adore you! We are always looking for more core volunteer staff so please reach out to any of us if you are interested. We need people who can dedicate a few hours a week for graphics, blog and clinical writing, PR (huge need), technical website help, and some administrative tasks as well. We are an ALL volunteer organization – everyone working to grow Walk AS One does so on this basis.

I would like to extend a farewell and big thank you to Debbie Cook who was the Chief Executive at NASS – National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society for just over 6 years. NASS serves the AS community in Great Britain and around the globe. Debbie did such a fantastic job connecting with the community and being involved with projects like ours. These types of community and personal connections mean a lot to all of us and she will be greatly missed.

I’d also love to share that Boston University Global App Initiative has selected us this year to help us develop an app! This is huge news for us as this is a service they provide at no charge to non-profits. The app should be ready in April 2018 just in time for WYASO 2018! It is our great hope that this will be the start of making the walk and step reporting available and easier for more and more people.

Please check out our calendar of upcoming events. We’re doing a fun challenge for October and World Arthritis Day – the One Week, One Mile, One Dollar challenge and for those creatively inclined we are asking for art submissions for the calendar I mentioned above. More information will be posted soon on this but get those creative juices flowing! We believe each calendar will be about $25 and will be filled with your artwork and tidbits of information about AS and the greater global community.

Finally I’d like to thank everyone who recently took the time to fill out our community survey. We started Walk AS One for all of you and it is so important to us to know how we’re doing and what we can do to serve you better in the future.

Not So Silent Auction to Benefit Walk AS One

We are holding a (not so) silent auction! Everyone loves a good auction. Here’s your chance to pick up something wonderful and unique while also helping to raise money for Walk AS One.

We are also accepting donations from the community to auction off. So if you have a piece of art, an unused gift card, an item still in its original packaging, a vacation spot you could donate for a weekend or week, or anything else you thing would make a great auction item, then we’d love to have your support!

The deadline for submitting auction items is the 30th of September.

All items will be subject to a $5 shipping and handling charge for residents in the United States. If bidding from outside the United States, higher charges will apply, dependent on the country you live in.

When is it?

Bids will be accepted from the 1st – 12th of October 2016.

Where is the auction?

Online! We have created an event through our Facebook page. This is the direct link.

How do I bid?

Each item will have a unique ID number. Simply tell us the item number and your bid amount. You can do so in two ways.

1. You can leave this in the comments on the Facebook Page.
2. Send us a private message with the details.
